Different backgrounds – same opportunities in today’s Europe
This project we will focus on two of the most important priorities of Strategy for European cooperation in education and training spanning until 2020 such as equality, social cohesion and active citizenship, and creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. As teachers, strongly believe in the values of education as the fundamental means through which our students can develop skills, knowledge and attitudes that will prepare them for integration in a growing EU under the umbrella “Unity in Diversity “
Today enhancing equality of chances in learning and teaching process is essential in order to provide a modern, dynamic, professional and tolerant environment inside our schools.
Partner schools have identified some important problems in their schools
We have many students facing cultural, ethnic, social and educational challenges and also migrants/refugees – schools from Sweden, Italy, Greece, Portugal
In our schools there are ethnic minorities such as Roma students – in Bulgaria, Greece, Portugal, Romania, Hungarians students in Romania, but also students with learning difficulties and from low educated families.
We face with stereotypes against minorities which are dominant and aggressively is balanced against these students in a risk situation
A lot of students lack important skills and competences, lack of self-confidence and support, problems of identity, they are in risk situation and these are some of the obstacles they have to overcome to have a successful life.
The objectives of the project are:
– To deal with having an equal right to education in different areas across Europe, integration people with different backgrounds, ethnic minorities, migrants/refugees
– To tackle integration and inclusion and avoid early school leaving, because young people need to approach the learning process and acquire of skills and competences in a flexible way
– To offer the chance to increase motivation for learning among students from vulnerable groups – such as ethnic minority, religious minority, poor economical and social backgrounds, and immigrants
– To create links between all kind of students in our schools and facilitate everyone access to reciprocal knowledge of cultural values
The target groups are: students of 15 to 19 years old, teachers, local governments and NGO, other stakeholders
Face-to-face encounters will raise students’ awareness for people of vulnerable groups, the necessity to promote important values as tolerance, mutual respect, non discrimination, appreciation of other cultures
Involved schools face with almost the same problems of integration students. We talk about 10 to15% immigrants such as in Sweden, Greece, Portugal, Italy – where they have a high percentage of immigrants from Syria, Albania, Georgia or South America, but also about students from families with many financial and internal family problems.
We intend to give them the chance to work effectively and speak in English. This will be provided by ensuring a rich environment that contains collaborative work, authentic materials and tasks, and shared knowledge.
This project will focus on identification the ways, tools and strategies to preserve our own ethnic, cultural, religious identities in a diverse and multicultural community
This project will help students to get over the gap of integration and adaption in the classroom and to cope with the high level academic standards of quality in education
Living in multicultural societies requires for our students to begin to learn about their European counterparts and develop positive attitudes towards communicating and working with them
Our project gives the opportunity to promote intercultural understanding among our students. They will learn about the different nationalities and cultures and will develop tolerance and cultural awareness that help them to avoid misunderstandings and handle cultural differences not only across borders but also in their cultural diverse communities
The project is focused on exchanges experience between partner schools that faces with the same problems – we will try to identify the similarities and differences and finding solutions
During the meetings we would like also to find solutions or methods and strategies to improve the negative aspects of our communities – such as, discrimination, using of stereotypes and prejudices, marginalization and economic and social imbalances.
We will focus on the ways, methods and activities developing the active citizenship, showing to the students the ways and means how to take action against any kind of exclusion and for equal chances for all groups of people in many aspects: equal rights of the ethnic (culture, language) minorities, including the fight against the racial discrimination
The project is needed to be carried out internationally, because we intend to share each other’s good practices, teaching and learning mutually, use the diversity in curricula.
